The future of truck and trailer connectivity will feature new technologies that transform the space and create new opportunities for fleet owners. There are, however, roadblocks in the industry that will need to be overcome:
  1. Long trailer life hinders innovation – Connections between the truck and trailer are antiquated and do not facilitate high bandwidth communication.
  2. No standardized communication protocol – While automobiles and trucks have over 100 Electronic Control Units (ECUs) on board, most trailers have a single ECU that controls the anti-lock braking system.
  3. Fragmented telematics space – There are more than 20 companies currently developing various sensing and digital products to improve truck-to-trailer connectivity. This creates a telematics environment that is built around non-synchronous, independent IoT sensors that are cobbled together using a mix of communication pathways.
